M-S Multi-layer Drawer Announcement
June 11, 2008
M-S's launch of the industry-first multi-layer cash drawers has swung into high gear with showings at FSTEC and the RSPA shows. So far there has been a tidal wave of interest in the innovative new products.
These products are actually composed of various full-size and half-size drawers manufactured in different combinations within a single case. Typically, the full-size drawers are used for traditional cash-and-coin counting. When two cashiers use the same terminal, either in the same-shift or sequential-shifts, the equipment provider must usually install two independent, bulky, expensive cash drawers, or even a second terminal. Multiple tills are often not the preferred solution since:
- Twice as many tills must be loaded before the shift
- Store owners do not want cashier's walking around the store unguarded with cash-laden tills
- Drawer-change between users is inherently faster than till-change.
An ideal solution is the M-S (1+1) two full-size-drawers in a single case smaller than if the drawers were in their own respective cases. This solution is also ideal for the international need to handle multiple currencies.
Half-size drawers (1/2) are typically used for:
- Coupons, frequent shopper/diner cards, contracts and forms. No longer will these documents be spread across the counter.
- A much less expensive "desktop safe" for excess cash and checks, by use of a media slot. Access can be limited to a manager key.
- When the second user of a terminal simply fills in for the first during breaks -- and thus a second full-size drawer is not needed.
Some higher-featured cash registers already offer such drawers.
The multi-layer approach has truly addressed important market needs to:
- Save purchase price and total cost of ownership
- Save space
- Make store operations faster, simpler, more organized and less error-prone
- Reduce loss and theft of coupons, loyalty cards, cash, checks and so forth
M-S already offers the following combinations within a single case:
- 1/2
- 1 + 1
- 1+ 1/2
- 1 + 1/2 + 1/2
These models may be configured with the appropriate cash or document tills to meet the customer's application.
"What makes this product line even more exciting is the next generation," says Sam Gopinathan, Vice President. "Application providers will wed their software to the drawer. Identification of a second user will automatically disable drawer #1 and enable drawer #2. Desktop safe versions will have locks activated only by application password or timer; no easy access under the till as it is now. Only the coupon drawer will open when a coupon or frequent shopper or dining card should be offered. The possibilities are limitless!!"
